Interrupted Passage

Interrupted Passage is a project by Julio Cesar Morales in collaboration with Max La Riviere-Hedrick, Norma Listman and Daniel Gorrell. The project explores the complex and diverse history of California, specifically focusing on the transfer of Alta California from Mexico to the United States in the mid 1800’s.

The project re-visits and examines Mexican General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo’s last hours in power and his subsequent arrest. Morales re-interprets these events from both Mexican and American viewpoints sourced through found and official texts. Interrupted Passage includes a video re enactment and series of food tastings dedicated to the feast that was given by Vallejo during the negotiations of the last 8 hours of when California was Mexico.
